Description

On the Day

Learn the basics of traditional letterpress printing on a one-to-one basis, or with a small group of friends or family.

After some basic prep in general principles and typography (if you’re unfamiliar), you’ll learn how to hand-set type on a composing stick, transfer it to a chase and lock it up for printing. From there you’ll learn how to ink up, operate and clean an Adana 8×5 tabletop press, the most popular of ‘starter’ presses.

Projects include creating a small print, some coasters, greetings cards or postcards and you get to take home a bundle of letterpress printed goodies to show your friends and family (there may be a small extra charge for materials, if you want to print a longer run).

Remember

Come prepared with an idea of what you’d like to print. We recommend recommending having your text written down for reference. If you’re not sure what to print, we have a library of typography, letterpress and print books to inspire and we’re happy to chat with you before the day to advise.

  • Wear old, practical clothes that you don’t mind getting inky, or bring an apron.
  • Sensible footwear; no sandals or heels.
  • Long hair is best tied back (we don’t want it getting trapped in the press or covered in ink!)

Please note: These letterpress workshops are not suitable for children under the age of 12 or for people who cannot stand for long periods of time. Young adults under the age of 16 will need to be accompanied by an adult.

This workshop runs for three, four or six hours at a time to suit you and costs from £89 per person

Maximum four per session. Discounts apply, please do enquire!

Tea and coffee is complimentary. We don’t provide food but you’re most welcome to bring refreshments with you. Food can be enjoyed in the Creative Space or our little courtyard during the warmer months. We can also recommend some lovely local places to eat.

Private tuition (on your own Adana if you wish) is also available. Email us for more information.

Making a special trip to Derby? We can recommend places to stay and things to do.

If you’ve got any other questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
