From the exhibition Looking Beyond by Rob Chapman
“Woodland places have a continually changing presence. Seeds sprout, saplings grow, trees mature and live for fifty or a hundred or five hundred years. They eventually fall or are cut down, they rot back into the earth which bore them or are taken away for uses good, bad or indifferent. The individuals are lost but the woodland remains. Both different and the same.
When walking in the woodlands, which provide the basis for my ideas, I cannot help seeing the continuity of the environment and its part in history of the locality and the people who lived, worked and died there. The changing nature of the woodland day to day, season to season is evident but so too is it’s long lasting ownership of the land. The woodland evokes, through it’s silences and it’s sounds, a sense that it retains the lives that have passed through it. It retains a community life which, if listened to, can be accessed through the sounds of birdsong, distant snatches of conversation, half heard and poorly understood noises both animal and arboreal in nature.
It is this that informs much of my work and provides an opportunity to view a timeless world. It is not a world which provides answers but one which offers the opportunity to ask questions. I don’t have the answers.”
